Girls: have you ever had a cyst in the ovary or an ovary removed? What's it like?

I have a cyst in my left ovary which is exceeding the size of the ovary itslef; its seems like I'm gointo the get the cyst removed and probably the ovary as well (I'll get the confirmation next week). I would like to know what happens with the menstruation; does it happen just once each 2 months? Is it done with general or local anesthesia; Is the recovery from the operation hurtful? How long should you stay in the hospital? And home in bed? Is the scar left very big? Will I be able to hide it? Anything else about the experience that you think I should know? Thanks!

It's OK. Don't worry, specialists earned their degrees for a reason. I had massive cysts on my ovaries in my late teens - so bad in fact that I was told I would never be able to have children. I have two - four years apart, so don't believe everything they tell you.

You will be placed under aenthesia (kind of like falling asleep.) The incision will be small - about and inch... even less depending on the size. There are usually very few complications and nothing about your menstrual cycle will change.

It will be a few weeks before your incision is completely healed, but you can confer with your OB/Gyn on how best to prevent scarring. Mederma is usually a prescription they will give you.

Good luck - this will not make you any less a woman! May that terrible cramping be reduced!
Reply:talk to your doctor if he can't answer that he don't need to cut on them da
Reply:they do it by laparoscope so u wont have a big scar

no change in menses and fertility as long as the other ovary is ok

dont worry

every thing else depends on pathology report
Reply:My sister did yes! While she was pregnant. The cyst was the size of a grapefruit, she had emergency surgery. She only has one ovary now.

She gets regular periods still, but she did bleed after the surgery. The hospital stay depends, over night to two days. Scar isn't very big at all. You will be able to hide it! :)

Just make sure you do it sooner than later, my sister waited and she got horrible horrible pains, rushed to the hospital, and had emergency surgery on it. She didn't loose the baby though. It is painful, but better to get the surgery than go through pain you might be feeling now. Home in bed, depends on the person. Take it easy around home maybe a week. I don't know about the anesthesia though, sorry.

I really hope this helps.
Reply:been there and done that

day surgery by lap with no visible scars after 18 months and your periods will be less severe one month but really no change! (or at least that is me) but definetely get the surgery to remove the ovary or it will continue to have cysts and one may burst then you really be in pain and you will not care about the scar to make the pain go away
Reply:I had both removed laproscopically. It involved only three small incissions that were covered by band-aids and I went home the same day with very little pain. The scars are no longer visible.
Reply:Check out the web site: Hystersisters.com

It is full of information.
Reply:when i was 11 i had a cysts the size of a grapefruit(or something like that they said it was huge)but it was i think on my left ovary i had to have surery it took about 7 hours(waking up was awful)(i didn't have to have my ovary removed thank god)it took me awile to recover.but a week later i had to be in my sisters wedding(and i had my period a 2 or 3 weeks later lol) it didn't seem like anything happened i was fine.it was horrible having it it ruined my life but now i am better also my scar is between my belly button and before my private area it was big for awile then you can't see it,it is a staright line but you can't really tell everything is fine now Also mine was on my ovary

also 2 years later another came up but this time it was small but i had atleast caught it before anything got serious and my doctor suggested just to take birth control pills(so it can do everything for me regualte my period and get rid of it)
Reply:I have had ovarian cysts... still have some small ones. I had one burst on me before and it's PAINFUL. I had to crawl to the phone for help. I never had one removed but I have had the ovarian drilling done. It is all done by LAP... through your bellybutton. I had three small incisions one in the naval, one a little higher up and one in the middle of the two more to the side. You can't see them anymore and I had the surgery done in April 2000. It was a day surgery... in and out. I was sore for 3 days.
Reply:You will be getting your period every month. When you go to the hospital they will talk to you after the OP and they can answer all your question on a professional level. Write all your questions down so you have them ready. It will hurt a bit, but not worry they have excellent stuff, whoopee!!! That will make you feel better.

Your stay in the hospital depends how good you're doing, mind you they try to kick everyone our real quick nowadays.

Anyway Good Luck and Get Well Soon.
